Emotional support
When a friend or family member receives a cancer diagnosis, simply being there to listen is often more valuable than finding the right words. If you feel uncomfortable, it’s OK to admit it, and often better than pretending nothing has changed. Try to listen without judgement and treat the person you’re supporting just as you always have, sharing jokes and talking about non-cancer related topics.
Sending thoughtful messages to let people know you’re thinking of them, without requiring a response, can really boost someone’s day. But it’s best to avoid giving unsolicited medical advice or telling them to “be positive”, as this can invalidate their feelings. Most importantly, you don’t have to feel alone in supporting your loved one – we’re there to support them, too.
